Dear members, dear friends,

We are sorry to say that one of our members has forever left us.

Dr. Ernst-Werner Schulze deceased some days ago.

Being full of ideas his life suddenly ended what was a shock for all of us and, especially, for his family.

Dr. Schulze, in Halle well known (he was a graphic artist) as EWS pursuant to the first letters of his name and first names, was one of the defenders of Halle in 1945. He over the years more and more thought back and asked himself of the sense, of the fact, that many of this classmates did not survive. He was one of our first members knowing that Count von Luckner played an outstanding role in saving Halle from being destroyed in April '45. EWS was the one who on April 16, 1945, took a written order of General Radtke to the Moritzcastle, where one of the headquarters was located. He reasoned that it was the order telling that a partial withdrawal of the German troops would be agreeing with the Germans. Count Luckner than left this place taking that message to the 104th. You know the results - Halle was saved!

Dr. Schulze in spring this year was together with the Timberwolves who visited us and I am sure Bill Burden and the other participants will remember these - I allow to mention it as - historic days when we were together with a TV-team all day.

One day (!) before EWS died, he was with us when we had a contemporary-witness-meeting in connection with our exhibition about World War II in Halle. He worked on a logo for our society etc.

Next Wednesday, we will pay our last respects to Dr. Ernst-Werner Schulze attending the funeral.

Thank you, EWS !!!
