Newsletter 1 July 2010

Dear members and friends,

Time passes too fast, and there are so many news to be told, so that we are forced to pack them in only one newsletter now.

Sad news first, we lost a good friend and active member. The owner of the pup "Schenke am Ochsenberg" deceased. Too young! Mario "Scholle" Scholz had organized a von Luckner room in his pup, and often we had a good time there, mostly on the Count's birthday. Thank you "Scholle", see you in a better world!

Looking forward we are now active for our new rooms, the "von Luckner Basement", which means to be a place for our society at our headquarters to meet each other, to accomodate guests and to provide a small exhibition, another step towards our museum in Halle! The rooms, not being in use for many years, had to be "liberated" from dust and litter. Thanks first to our member Hans Goedecke for providing the container. Thanks, furthermore, for the many other members being with us to help. A great experience to have you here, all of you. So we only needed a short of time to get the rooms clean. Lots of things have to be done, but "together we stand".

Last weekend, a great landlord company organised a picknick in Halle, we helped in getting a von Luckner table with original things of our society, a good PR for us.

The ship "Seeteufel" got saved. Restoration is almost completed, and, the ship probably will to be seen at "Hanse Sail" in August at Rostock this year. We do not have details yet, but we hope that we can join that event an meet the Russian owner of the ship for the first time then. Who could be with us from you?

The American Contingent (app. 70 Mitglieder) is a very active part of our society. Collecting information, contacts and more. Very good to know that our work is becoming more and more international, great! On July, 28, John Fasulo, who together with Lenore Meyer is organising the American Contingent (thank you for doing a good job!!!),  will be our guest in Halle. The father of John met the Count in 1930, I personally met John in February this year, thanks again for all you've done for us, John, we'll pleased to have you here this month! The members will be invited later on.

On Wednesday, June 30, I joined the party for Independence Day of the USA as a guest of the Consulate General in Leipzig. The party this year was held in Bad Lauchstädt, a most beautiful place near Halle, even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was there and helped building up a theatre which is still in use!

Oh, I forgot to say, my fiancée Petra and me got married one month ago on in Halle at a public place. The story (in German only, sorry, but good picture indeed) can be found here.

Many donations in kind we had; in future we intend to have a special link to honore those who helped in that way and by luck, we could by some very special things, especially books. Thanks to all who donated and helped us.

Tomorrow I will be in Hannover, you will never guess what I am going to purchase which can be of good use for us. Keep tight, next newsletter will tell you what it is.

Best regards

Matthias J. Maurer
